Outreach and Education Experience

This is not a complete list, which would be far too long to include here. Rather, this information is indicative of the kinds of education and public outreach work with which I’ve been involved, the expertise from which could be directly applicable to your outreach and educational needs, desires, and goals.

Executive Director, National Space Grand Foundation, a 501(c)3 entity organized to work with the National Space Grant Consortia and other organizations in support of their STEM educational and outreach missions.

Judge, Montana Space Grant Consortium’s Student Research Symposia, reviewing student presentations and posters, and interacting with students at several levels to help them further their undergraduate- and graduate-student activities and provide career guidance.

Presenter, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Responsible for developing and delivering a lecture on Origins of Life, to students in an adult education course.

Advisor, Challenger Center, Greenbelt, MD. Responsible for providing and reviewing material for Earth system science scenario.

Writer and Technical Editor, Earth Observing System Project Science Office, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Responsibilities include generating and technical editing articles for a bimonthly newsletter.

Reviewer, Institute of Global Environmental Strategies. Responsibilities included reviewing Earth system science-related educational materials across several media for use by students and the general public.

Reviewer, Science Books & Films, American Association for the Advancement of Science. Responsibilities include reviewing scientific and technical books targeted to a wide range of audiences.

Visiting Faculty Member – Scientific Knowledge for Indian Learning and Leadership (SKILL), South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Spent several weeks for two summers working with Native American high school students to educate them on Earth system science.

Adjunct Professor, Merrick School of Business, University of Baltimore. Taught three sections over a two-year period of an online MBA-level course on Learning, Leadership, and Change.

Adjunct Instructor, College of Business, Montana State University. Taught two sections of a senior-level undergraduate course in Entrepreneurship.

Advisor, Montana Space Grant Consortium, National Student Solar Spectrograph Competition.

Appraiser, Destination Imagination student competitions. Responsibilities have included working with elementary and middle school student groups to ensure adherence to competition requirements and limitations and ensuring the safety of teams’ solutions.

Judge, FIRST Lego League Robot tournaments. Responsibilities include examining elementary and middle school teams’ robots, eliciting design considerations and trade-offs that went into their constructs, and ensuring compliance with competition requirements.

Judge, student speech, drama, and debate tournaments.

Judge, student musical and dramatic talent competitions.
